About Te Hauora O Te Hiku O Te Ika

Who We are ... Te Hauora O Te Hiku O Te Ika Trust is one of a number of Maori health provider organisations set up throughout New Zealand in the 1990's. The purpose of these organisations is to try and "narrow the gaps" in health statistics that exist here between people of Maori and European ancestry.

With the health reforms of 2003 - 2004 and the setting up of PHO's (Primary Health Organisations) throughout New Zealand, Te Hauora O Te Hiku O Te Ika Trust combined with Whakawhiti Ora Pai, a Far North Peninsula Maori health trust to enrol approx 4500 patients. This has changed the nature of the Te Hauora O Te Hiku O Te Ika Trust and Whakawhiti Ora Pai organisations, bringing in responsibilities of full time primary health care, and general family practice services with after-hours emergency roster etc, in addition to the original nurse led services.

Te Hauora O Te Hiku O Te Ika Trust has developed a large primary health care team, including 18 registered nurses, 3 fulltime doctors, as well as numerous health promotion staff, community workers and enrolled nurses. Fulltime GP clinics have been established in Kaitaia, Coopers Beach and weekly GP clinics in Te Kao and fortnightly GP clinics in Te Hapua.

The mobile clinic is run by a nurse practitioner service. We also have two full time nurses focusing on chronic care as well as cardiac, diabetes, respiratory and mobile specialist nursing services. A recent development in 2005 has been introduction of midwifery services, with three midwives working as lead maternity caregivers for the trust .

As part of its commitment to quality, the trust employs highly qualified staff and strongly supports training at all levels of the organisation.

Our Coverage Area Our coverage area stretches north of Hokianga Harbour in the west, and Whangaroa Harbour n the east, north to the tip of the Far North Peninsula, Spirit's Bay and Cape Reinga lighthouse.
