Health Promotions – Breast Screening

Our Aim Early detection is the best protection! We provide a screening program to help women detect abnormalities and potentially dangerous breast conditions early on. This service is for Maori women 45-69 years and delivered by a community health worker It aims to screen those women in the most at-risk group of developing breast cancer by providing a free breast screening, promotion and education service. Wahine Ma, of any age, who feels or notices anything unusual about their breasts, at any time, should see their GP, Mobile Nurse, Practice Nurse or Kaimahi Wahine Maori.

Objectives Kaupapa Maori Support:

• Awhi to appointments both physically and via transport needs
• Manaaki me tautoko at appointments
• Manaaki me tautoko towards accommodation when required
• Tautoko from Wahine Maori

• Facilitating the needs of Wahine Maori for a better Breast Screening service
• Wahine Maori identifying what will work best for Wahine Maori
• Wahine Maori providing tautoko, awhi and manaaki for other Wahine Maori

• Kaimahi Maori
• Qualified Screening Kaimahi
• Confidentiality
• Privacy
• Supportive Mobile Screening Van Kaimahi
• Environments that supports korero to occur

• Presentations to women’s groups, Marae committees, staff and whanau of kura kaupapa, Kohanga Reo, schools and women’s groups
• Home visits or clinic visits
• Support and transport to assessments and treatment
• Work with various stakeholders to identify screening within Te Tai Tokerau
• Work in collaboration with other providers
• Identify with Wahine Maori programmes, events and activities that meet their needs
• Provide an holistic approach to health
• Provide resources where and when required that supports and encourages wahine to utilise the Mobile Screening Unit

Eligible Clients

• Wahine Maori – Wahine Pakeha – Wahine Kato
• Has no symptoms or lumps
• Is aged between 45-69 years
• Is not registered with breast screen Aotearoa
• Has not had a mammogram within the last 12 months
