ABOUT GP CLINICS

Te Whare Hauora operates from a historically significant building, a renovated nurse's home, within grounds of Kaitaia Hospital. Mamaru Clinic operates from modern premises in a small shopping centre at Coopers Beach. There are 2 General Practitioner (GP) rooms, 2 practice nurse triage rooms, and a waiting room in each practice. Each practice is well equipped and able to carry out minor surgery. X-ray and laboratory services are available at Kaitaia Hospital, which also provides acute, outpatient, surgical, medical, paediatric services and hosts visiting specialists.

Hours of operation for each practice are 8.00 am to 5.00 pm, Monday to Friday. Kaitaia Hospital has no Emergency Department therefore all after hours patients are referred to the after hours GP. Each GP is required to participate in the after hours roster. On call is approximately 1:10 weekdays and weekends.

There is one resident GP and 2 locum GPs circulating between the two practices, supported by four practice nurses and a Nurse Practitioner with prescribing rights. The Nurse Practitioner also works in the practice's mobile clinic, servicing outreach locations.

Profile is the computerised patient management system, and the practices are affiliated to the Te Tai Tokerau Primary Health Organisation (TTTPHO), receiving capitated patient subsidies available for PHO affiliates.

The nearest base hospital is Whangarei, 160 kilometres away. This can be reached by ambulance or emergency helicopter. Whangarei Hospital has 225 inpatient beds and provides a full range of secondary services from modern facilities.
